Substantial Online Disruption Impacts Many Sites and Apps

A widespread web disruption has affected many websites and apps globally, as users noting issues connecting to the web following issues at Amazon’s cloud computing service.

The disrupted platforms include Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-owned platforms like its key e-commerce website and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was impacted as well as its subsidiaries Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with also reports of issues using the HM Revenue and Customs website on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring users turned to networks to state their doorbells were failing.

Just within Britain, reports of problems on specific applications totaled the many thousands for every service.

Amazon reported that the issue began in the east coast of the America at Amazon Web Services, a division that offers essential internet backbone for numerous businesses, who utilize space on the company's servers. AWS is the biggest global online services system.

Just after late night (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “elevated failure rates and latencies” for AWS services in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the US. The ripple effect appeared to disrupt apps globally, and the Downdetector site reporting issues with the corresponding services in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, further indicated a rise in problems on that morning, and numerous instances located in the Virginia area, the location of the eastern US data center where AWS said the issues originated.
