Rare Red Lightning Photographed in the Atmosphere
Three photography enthusiasts operating in New Zealand have managed to photograph photographs of red lightning, one of the least common atmospheric displays globally, during which luminous crimson flashes appear in the sky.
An Unforgettable Night of Discovery
The imaging specialists had originally set out to photograph the night sky over the distinctive clay formations in the South Island of the country on a night in October, when they chanced upon the rare phenomenon.
Assuming they would be fortunate to get clear skies that evening, but their shooting session turned into “an unforgettable one,” an individual involved commented.
“He was checking his files for a galaxy composite and discovered he had captured red sprites,” he noted. “The discovery was astounding – it resulted in screaming and shouting and various reactions in the dark.”
Defining Red Sprites
Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the mesosphere, generated by storm systems. Differing from traditional lightning that shoots towards the surface, the phenomena ascend towards the upper atmosphere, forming shapes that are similar to pillars, tapered shapes or even marine creatures. The earliest recorded picture of a such an event was taken – by chance – in the late eighties, by a group at the a academic organization.
Fleeting and Ethereal Sightings
These events are extremely short-lived – lasting just a millisecond – that they are infrequently observed to the naked eye, but an individual had a lucky break. “I happened to be looking right at one when it occurred – just a perfect coincidence observing the appropriate section of the sky and I observed a short crimson illumination,” he said.
Observing the events was a aspiration for this individual, an award-winning dark sky artist. “It appears as if you’re seeing something that is not real, it appears mystical … there is an intense scarlet hue that is present only momentarily, so it is captivating to see.”
Advanced and Innovative Mastery
Photographing a such an event requires a expertise in advanced imaging techniques, as well as an knowledge about scientific principles and innovative thinking, he explained. “It is a deeply engaging category of art that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
Another photographer said it was counted as the “most incredible evenings” of his life. “I could see the starry river glowing above the distant edge while these giant scarlet filaments of energy danced above a thunderstorm hundreds of kilometres away,” he described.
An Exceptional Photographic Achievement
To his knowledge, there are no additional photographs showing red sprites and the night sky of the south in one frame.
“It was one of those moments when you know you are observing something you’ll probably never see again.”
